best way to clean old toy cars?

came across some old Dinkys while cleaning out the garage and would love to get them cleaned up [they'd been played with a lot, so they're not in the best shape -- caked mud, peeling paint]. Is it a good idea to wash them with soap and water or is dusting them with a dry brush or cloth better?

I would not advise using soap and water. If they can be dusted off, that may be the way to go. Except for the metal base plate, whic was usually stamped steel, Dinky Toys were cast in an alloy called "Mayzak". The axles amy have rust on them and the baseplates, also. If you need any help identifying them, please let me know. I am a collector of Dinky Toys (all of mine (400+) are in pristine condition, many with the original box).
